What is Special Programs?

Special Programs is a collection of services, both residential and community-based, for individuals and families affected/infected with HIV/AIDS. It provides short-term shelter, long-term rental assistance, food, utilities assistance, rental arrears assistance, confidential HIV testing, condoms, and support groups.

How do I qualify?

Condoms and confidential HIV testing are available to everyone.

For housing, food and financial assistance programs, you must provide proof of the HIV+ status for yourself or someone in your household. If the HIV+ person is not you, we will ask for proof that you share a residence. For the Food Pantry, no other referral is needed.

All rental, relocation and utility assistance is for residents of East Orange.

What do I need to apply?

If you are a resident of East Orange, you can apply with proof of HIV status, proof of income, social security card, court summons for back rent, and shut-off notice from utility bill. Anyone living in Essex County can apply to join our support group.

Who do I contact?

For long- and short-term housing, contact Pat Patterson, Case Manager at extension 3027.

For housing assistance, call Cheryl Carter-Weeks, Director of Community Affairs at extension 3002.
