Legal, medical, accounting, trades — professional time is the donation we can least afford to buy.
An hour of your job is worth more than an hour of ours.
Every hour a charity spends buying professional help is an hour it did not spend housing anybody. Legal, accounting, medical, trades, design, IT — this is work we would otherwise have to pay for out of money meant for families.
It is also the only kind of donation that gets more valuable the better you are at your job.
What tends to be useful
Legal — housing, benefits, expungement, immigration and family law, for residents rather than for us. Re-entry in particular turns on paperwork that a lawyer can clear in an afternoon.
Trades — plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting. We run buildings that families live in, and a repair done free is a night nobody loses.
Health — clinicians, counselors and specialists who can see residents on site rather than sending them across the county for an appointment they cannot reach.
Back office — accounting, audit, IT, HR, design and photography. Unglamorous, and it is exactly where a small organization loses money it cannot spare.
How to offer
Contact us and say what you do and roughly how much time you have. We will be straight with you about whether we can use it — a promise we cannot take up is worse than a no.
